Memoir

(from the French meaning a memory or a reminiscence)

Fast becoming a required footnote to a life well lived, a memoir is your story written as you want it remembered.

As a literary genre, memoir forms a subclass of autobiography.  Like autobiographies, memoirs are generally written as a narative from the first person point of view.  Memoirs are structured differently from autobiographies which usually encompass an entire lifetime.  The chronological scope of a memoir is determined by the context and is therefore more focused and flexible.  A memoir can be more about what can be learned from a section of a life than about the outcome of the life as a whole.

An autobiography is history, requiring research, dates, and fact checking.  A memoir relies on your memory so there is license regarding the surrounding facts.  Though it is the retelling of a true account, it is not usually regarded as being completely true. This ghostwriter will take your word as fact.  No one can recall every detail or bit of dialogue from an event that took place many years ago. Consequently, some allowance must be granted by the reader who may have a different recollection of the same event.  The names of people and even places can be changed.

Some accomplished people fear their story is not dramatic or significant enough to merit a memoir.  My method is best described as "creative nonfiction."  I will make your story as dramatic and significant as you wish.

A memoir for recreational, family, or therapeutic purposes is sometimes referred to as legacy writing.  It can ultimately focus on the emotional significance of your story. Generally, this emotional significance is the result of a resolution from a conflict within your story.  Written as a legacy, a memoir can be what you hope your life meant to those who loved you or were affected by your choices and actions.  It can be a clarification or explanation and can be a means of providing closure for your significant others and for yourself.  It can be a method of easing your conscience or unburdening yourself by saying things to loved ones that you just can’t communicate otherwise.  Some prefer their memior is not read during their lifetime and leave it to be distributed as part of their estate.  Others give it out enthusiasically and enjoy the reactions they receive.

Memoirs are often written for politicians, military or business leaders, or individuals who find themselves in the news in order to record and publish an account of their public exploits.  For most of us our lives have little significance outside our immediate family and close friends.  For some of us, the audience includes nearly everyone.  Some memoirs are therefore printed, bound, and distributed as gifts while others are published and can be purchased by anyone.

This ghost views your memoir as your way to immortalize yourself.  As long as your memoir is passed down you will live in the minds of others.
